How to choose a paint sheen for each room

By Sandbox Home Services · August 4, 2026 · 2 min read

Four painted sample boards in the same color, labeled flat, eggshell, satin, and semi-gloss

Choosing a color gets all the attention, but the sheen you pick decides how a painted wall looks up close and how well it stands up to everyday life. Sheen is how much light the dried paint reflects. More sheen means a tougher, easier-to-clean surface, but also one that shows every dent and patch underneath.

The main sheens, from dull to shiny

Flat or matte reflects almost no light. It hides small flaws in the wall better than anything else, which makes it the usual choice for ceilings. The trade-off is durability: scrubbing a flat wall can leave a shiny patch.

Eggshell has a soft, low glow. It is a good middle ground for living rooms and bedrooms, where walls get occasional marks but rarely need scrubbing.

Satin is a little shinier and noticeably more washable. It suits hallways, kitchens, and children’s rooms, where hands and bags brush the walls every day.

Semi-gloss is hard and shiny. It is the standard for doors, trim, and cabinets, because those surfaces get touched and knocked more than any wall.

Room by room

  • Ceilings: flat, to hide imperfections and reduce glare from lights.
  • Living rooms and bedrooms: eggshell or matte.
  • Hallways and stairs: satin, because they take the most wear.
  • Kitchens and bathrooms: satin or a paint made for moisture.
  • Trim and doors: semi-gloss, so they wipe clean and stand out slightly from the walls.

Why preparation matters more with shinier paint

The shinier the finish, the more it shows what is underneath. A small patch that disappears under flat paint can show as a dull spot under satin. That is why walls with repairs need careful sanding and priming before a higher-sheen finish goes on. If your walls have cracks or old patches, read how we handle drywall repair before you choose.

A simple rule

When in doubt, go one step less shiny on walls and one step more shiny on trim. You get walls that look smooth and trim that is easy to keep clean. Our interior painting quotes always list the sheen for each surface, so you know what you are getting before work starts.
